that might have happened. The speaker imagines how things could have been different
if something had happened in the past. The conditions belong to the past, so they are
impossible to fulfil. Such suppositions and conditions are called Type III conditional
The structure of a sentence with a Type III conditional clause that refers to the past is:
if ... past perfect tense + modal verb + have + past participle
Example: If I had saved enough money | could have gone to New York,
