It is said that, "Cleanliness is next to Godliness".  Dirty surroundings can lead to many problems and diseases. Mosquitoes and Flies which carry disease causing organisms breed in dirty places. Malaria, flu and other diseases are caused due to mosquito bites. Flies sit on items of food and thus transfer pathogens to the food which results in disease.

Dirty surroundings lead to bad smell and pollution. They have a negative impact on the minds and life style of the people. Unhygienic conditions lead to ill health and lack of all round development of an individual.

The Swachch Bharat Abhiyan or Clean India Campaign aims at creating a clean India. If there is proper sanitation the country can be kept clean and beautiful. People can live a dignified life. It will also provide protection from diseases which are caused due to unhygienic conditions.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched on 2nd October 2014 at Rajghat. It aims at making India clean by 2nd October 2019. It is supposed to be a tribute to the Father of the Nation on his 150th birth anniversary. Its objectives are:

1. To provide sanitation facilities to every family.

2. To construct toilets.

3. To provide adequate solid and liquid waste disposal systems.

4. Village cleanliness.

5. Safe and adequate drinking water supply.

Youth and children can play an important role in keeping the rivers clean. They can help in creating awareness among people regarding the need to keep the rivers clean. They can write articles, give speeches, organize teams, stage skits and plays to show the importance of the river and the need to save it. On weekends they can get together and clean the surroundings of the river. They can make and put posters near the river to keep it clean.

River Ganga has a lot of religious importance for the Hindus. It is the largest river in India. It provides water to a vast population. It is also referred to as Mother Ganga. There is story which tells us that the river descended from Heaven to redeem mankind. It is believed that the river can wash away a person's sins.

But this sacred river has become polluted over time. People bathe and wash clothes in the river. It is considered holy for the last rites of the Hindus. Sometimes people are careless and throw rubbish like bottles and other things into the river.

There are a number of industrial cities on the banks of the river like Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi and Patna. A large number of tanneries, chemical plants, distilleries, textile mills and hospitals are located near the river. They dump the untreated waste into the river. Thus they pollute the river.

Polluted water carries germs which can cause diseases. Many efforts have been made to clean the river. In 1905 Madan Mohan Malviya founded the Ganga Mahasabha which is an Indian organization dedicated to the Ganga river.

The Ganga Action Plan was launched in January 1986 to reduce the pollution level of the river. An amount of Rs. 9,017 million was spent but the results were not very good.

The Namami Ganga project was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2014. It aims at cleaning the river and controlling pollution. The Government has allocated Rs. 2,037 crore for this project.                It will focus on pollution abatement interventions like interception, diversion and treatment of waste water flowing through the open drains. The Government ordered the closure of 48 industrial units around Ganga as part of the program.

It is our duty to cooperate with the Government in the efforts to clean the river and to maintain its sanctity.

At the same time cleanliness should be accompanied with the planting of trees and the protection of the existing greenery. So that we will have pure water and clean air for all the people. Our India will become 'Clean India, Green India'.
