India ranks sixth in terms of carbon emission in the world. Given that it is still a rapidly developing nation, it's unlikely that it will be able to cut down its emissions very sharply in the medium term.

*With a growing population and a rising consumption-driven middle class, the country's electricity demand will double by 2020. Already, what is currently being generated is woefully inadequate as nearly 150 million Indian still live without any electricity.About 60 percent of pollution in the country is caused by power generation and yet, we're still hungry for more power capacity for fuelling economic growth.

The facts were revealed at a World Economic Forum (WEF) India Summit session on "Green growth in India: From agenda to action". The two-day summit, which began on Sunday, is being held in Mumbai. Experts at the panel discussed different ways in which India could become more environmentally conscious while still pushing for economic growth.

So where are the largest opportunities for India to go green? The experts honed in on four key areas.

Infrastructure: India still has to build 99 percent of its infrastructure, which affords plenty of opportunities to go green.By 2015, about 20 percent of India's energy is estimated to come from renewable resources. But for that to happen, the pace of privatisation, especially in the power sector, needs to pick up. Reforms have to take place in all three segments of the power sector: generation, transmission and distribution.

Urbanisation: By 2050, India's population will increase by about 500 million. They can have a better way of life if India implements smart urbanisation policies, especially in zoning, transit and housing. Building good public transport systems and encouraging carbon-free modes of movement such as walking and cycling and building offices near people's homes are some ways of doing that, experts at the session said. For instance, new cities can have buildings near train or bus stations, as well as taller buildings to change the carbon footprint impact.
