cleaning action of soap and detergents
Answers
A soap or detergent molecule has two parts i.e. a hydrophobic part which is soluble in oil or grease and a hydrophilic part which is soluble in water.
When soap is dissolved in water, the hydrophobic part gets attracted towards the oily part i.e. dirt. Whereas the hydrophilic part stays away from this And thus, micelle formation takes place.
When a dirty cloth is put in water containing dissolved soap, the hydrocarbon ends of soap molecules in the micelle attach to the dirt, on the surface of the dirty cloth. In this way, soap micelle entraps the dirt. Ionic or hydrophilic ends remain attached to water. When this dirty clothes is agitated, the dirt gets dispersed in the soap solution and becomes clean..
