Concept

The Clemmensen reduction is used for reduction of aldehydes or ketones to alkanes by using zinc amalgam and Hydrochloric acid.

Explanation

There are two mechanism of Clemmenson reduction

Carbonionic mechanism

Carbenoid mechanism

Carbanionic mechanism : This mechanism shows the direct attack of the zinc to the protonated carbon.

Carbenoid mechanism : The radical process for the reduction on zinc metal surface.

Hence Clemmensen reduction will convert cyclohexanone in to cyclohexane.
