The distance between stars is a very long set of measurement, that is why we have introduced light year to represent these distances. A light year is the distance travelled by light in a year as light being the fastest known object.

When we say that the distance between the Earth and a star is 8 light years, it means that it takes light to travel from the Earth to the star 8 years
