There are some confusions as to what was the actual climax of the story of Hunchback of Notre Dame. The real climax takes place when the character of Phoebus ends up alive. When the army comes to save her from the sanctuary while they were in reality coming with a different motive. Their aim was to take Phoebus so that they could hang her on her return.

Explanation:

This story was confused that when Frollo becomes obsessed with the gypsy and tries to kidnap her, that is seen as the peak point. However, the twist of Phoebus still being alive in the story is the correct peak of this story written by Victor Hugo.

The climax of the story the Hunchback of Notre Dame:

The Hunchback of Notre-Dame is a French Gothic novel written by Victor Hugo and was published in the year 1831. The story revolves around a lovely gypsy girl called La Esmeralda, who is the object of love for Quasimodo and an object of lust for Claude Frollo.

The climax of the story takes place when Quasimodo realized that he had lost La Esmeralda. Since La Esmeralda had been taken away from the cathedral sanctuary, Quasimodo is resolute to punish those responsible for it. Quasimodo, the deaf, hunch-backed bell-ringer of Notre-Dame Cathedral who loves La Esmeralda even though she is disgusted by his appearance, rescues La Esmeralda from being sentenced to death for a crime she did not commit and keeps her in the church which is meant to be a sanctuary for criminals.

However, Claude Frollo, the archdeacon who lust for La Esmeralda conspires a plan to have truants attack the cathedral so that Gringoire and Claude can abduct La Esmeralda. Claude wanted to set up "Gringoire" and get "La Esmeralda" out of the cathedral so that she would be hung for leaving the asylum. When Quasimodo returns to the cathedral to La Esmeralda's room, he realized that she had been kidnapped by Claude and Gringoire. Gringoire decided to save La Esmeralda's goat, Djali and deserts Esmeralda.

Seeing this, Claude leads La Esmeralda to the Place de Grève and tells her she would be hung except if she agreed to run away with Claude; however she refuses. He later takes La Esmeralda to the Recluse's (whose real name was Paquette la Chantefleurie; however she is now called as the Recluse, since she had long ago locked herself in this cell to bewail after her daughter was abducted by gypsies, and since then she has harbored a hatred for the gypsies—especially for Esmeralda) cell to let the Recluse avenge the gypsies by imprisoning Esmeralda till the king's officer’s returns.

However, La Esmeralda and the Recluse realize that they both are actually mother and daughter as they see the baby shoe which each of them had. However, before they enjoy their reunification, La Esmeralda is taken away to be hung, and the Recluse is murdered trying to guard Esmeralda. At Notre-Dame Cathedral, Quasimodo and Claude Frollo watch Esmeralda being hung from the rooftop. When Claude starts laughing, Quasimodo shoves him off the sill. Quasimodo then disappears after that; however, his skeleton is seen embracing La Esmeralda in the burial pit meant for victims of the gallows.
