Most probably your question is partially incorrect I guess.

A clock has numbers from 1 to 12. Sum of all the numbers will be 78.

So, the clock broke into 3 pieces.

Let the first part be A, second part be B and third part be C.

Acc to question, sum of numbers of part A is 30 and that of part B is 31.

So, it is pretty obvious that the third piece will have sum = 78 - (30 + 31) = 17.

Numbers in Part A = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9

Numbers in Part B = 8, 11, 12

Numbers in Part C = 7, 10

There might be other possible combinations as well.

anurakrsh: no 12 is cut in such a way the number is shown 1 and 2 Apart and the crack is coming to no 8 in the middle so that it is 0 and 0.

0 (half of 8)+9+10+11+1(portion of 12)=31
2(portion of 12)+1+2+3+4+5+6+7+0(Portion of 8)=3

The question clearly tells that the clock breaks into two pieces.

The sum of all the numbers in the first piece is 31.

The sum of all the numbers in the other piece is 30.

Explanation:

The clock breaks between 12 and 8 separating the numbers 1 and 2 vertically from 12 and divides 8 into 0 and 0 horizontally.

If that's the case,

The numbers on the first piece are 0,9,10,11 and 1.

Their sum is 31.

The numbers on the second piece are 2,1,2,3,4,5,6,7.

Their sum is 30.

Hence, the clock breaks vertically separating 1 and 2 from 12 and horizontally separating 8 into 0 and 0.
