Flint Lockwood always dreamed of becoming a scientist. His father, a sardine salesman, doesn't understand science or technology, but his mother encourages him to chase his dreams. Flash forward to Flint as a young man: his mother has passed away, leaving him alone in a house with a father who doesn't understand him and his lab assistant, a monkey named Steve who wears a thought translator (though the thought translator mostly just repeats Steve's name over and over). He dreams of creating an invention that will change his town forever. Since the town suffers from only having sardines to eat, Flint thinks up a machine that turns water into food. He attempts to activate it while the town opens their brand new tourist attraction, Sardineland, the world's first sardine-themed amusement park. However, the two meet rudely, as Flint's machine rockets around the town, destroying Sardineland and turning Flint into an outcast. This is especially disappointing to a young weather news intern, Sam Sparks, whose first assignment was to cover the opening of Sardineland for the station. However, when it suddenly begins raining hamburgers, Sam has her story, and Flint realizes that his machine is up in the sky, working properly, raining down food upon the people of the town. Everyone is overjoyed, and tourism goes through the roof, as everyone wants to visit a town that rains food from the sky. However, when the food suddenly grows uncontrollably large and begins to cause destruction to the city, even resulting in food-related storms like spaghetti tornados, it's up to Flint, Sam, and their friends to find a way to fly into the sky, locate Flint's machine and turn it off once and for all. Yet if it's up to the malevolent mayor who doesn't want tourism to dip, they'll never even leave the ground.
