Club fungi includes Ustilago and Puccinia.

  • Basidiomycetes are also known as club fungi and they are a well recognised group of true fungi.

  • They form the sub-kingdom of 'higher fungi' along with the group of Ascomycota, called Dikarya.

  • The phylum, Basidiomycota are referred to as filamentous fungi, which possess hyphae (except yeast) and follow sexual repordiction by the formation of specialized club-shaped cells(basidia) that usually have external meiospores called basidiospores.

  • They are called club fungi due to the presence of these specialised cells (basidia) containing the sexual spores that resembles a club shaped structure.

  • Some examples of this group are mushrooms, certain yeasts, stinkhorns, shelf fungi, etc.
