First add Hcl to it and then add benzene in presence of anhydrous Alcl3....

C6H5COOH +Hcl --->C6H5COCl

Conversion of benzoic acid to benzophenone

  • In order to remove the -COOH group from the benzoic acid, it is first heated with soda lime as shown in the given equation

C_6H_5COOH+soda lime→ C_6H_6

  • This heating leads to the formation of pure benzene which is then treated with ethanoyl chloride.

C_6H_6 + CH_3CoClC_6H_5CoCl

  • This reaction yields benzyl chloride, which when treated with anhydrous aluminum chloride, yields benzophenone and hydrochloric acid.

C_6H_5CoCl+ AlCl_3

C_6H_6COC_6H_5+HCl
