Given:

Co|co2+ (c2)|| co2+ (c1) co,.

To find:

For this cell ∆G is negative if

Solution:

From given, we have,

Co|co2+ (c2)|| co2+ (c1) co,.

Co + Co{+2} → Co{+2} + Co

          C1             C2

we have,

ΔG = -nFE

ΔG is negative only if E is positive.

using Nernst equation, we have,

E = E⁰ - 0.0591/n log {[Co{+2} [Co]}/{[Co{+2} [Co]}

E = E⁰ - 0.0591/n log C2/C1

E = E⁰ + 0.0591/n log C1/C2

ΔG is negative only if E is positive and E will be positive only if C1 > C2.

∴ ΔG is negative only if C1 > C2
