How is coal formed?

Coal is formed from natural vegetation.

Millions of years ago, dense forests got buried under the soil due to natural processes like storms, floods, earthquakes. These got compresses as more and more soil got deposited over them. When they got buried deep in the soil, they were exposed to very high pressure and temperature. Under these conditins, these slowly got converted into coal.

This process of formation of coal from dead vegetation is called carbonisation.

Why should we reduce the use of coal?

We should reduce the use of coal due to following reasons:

• It is a non-renewable source of energy.

• When we burn coal, it realeases CO2 gas, which is very harmful to nature.

• It is radioactive.

• Coal burning leads to acid rain.
