Coal is a nonrenewable resource known as a fossil fuel. It's the most abundant fossil fuel we have. The four types of coal include peat, lignite, bituminous, and anthracite, with anthracite being most desirable due to its high heat content. The main source of man- made CO2 emissions, however, is the burning of fossil fuels (oil, natural gas and coal) for energy production. Carbon dioxide is important for plants and animals, but if too much of it is produced, it can build up in the air and trap heat near the earth's surface. The organic compounds in coal are composed of the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and trace amounts of a variety of other elements.Coal can be extracted from the earth either by surface mining or underground mining. Once coal has been extracted, it can be used directly (for heating and industrial processes) or to fuel power plants for electricity. If coal is less than 61 meters (200 feet) underground, it can be extracted through surface mining.
