During the 1970s the government observed that a lot of foreign currency was going out of the country due to soft drinks. Also a lot of profit from Indian market was going out of the country. So the government canceled their licenses to sell them in India.
So Thumbs up and Campa cola came up in India.
Due to globalization policies to globalize Indian market, the foreign companies were allowed in India to establish joint ventures.

Coca- cola and Fanta are under the same brand of Coca cola, whereas Pepsi is another brand. The refreshments went through a lot of changes with the change in decades.
- Thums-Up and Campa-Cola were produced by private brands in India. Campa Cola Company was the liscensed Coca-Cola company in India prior to 1970's.
- But many of the foreign countries withdrew from India in 1977, due to the Indian government's rule of foreign companies to be owned by Indian firms.
- With no foreign soft-drink in competiton, Thums up and Campa Cola were introduced and both rapidly grew in market share. Pepsi first came in when Indian market reopened to international firms in 1991 and started competing with the local brands.
- In 1993, Coca-Cola re-entered the Indian market and purchased the Thums-Up. Coca-Cola continues to manufacture thums up because of the popularity and to compete with Pepsi.
