Similar triangles are two or more triangles that have all corresponding angles that are equal and all corresponding sides that are proportionate. It does not matter what direction the triangles are facing. Their size does not matter as long as each side is proportionate.
Similarity of Triangles.
Similar Figures
→ Two figures are said to be similar if they have same shape and size.
→ Any congruent figures are similar but not all similar figures are congruent.
→ All line segments are always similar, but they may not be congruent. (Note that all line segments are straight and have 180°)
→ All squares are similar to each other and all equilateral triangles are similar to each other but not necessarily congruent. This is because they have all their angles equal to 90° (for square) and 60° (for equilateral triangle).
Similar Polygons
Two polygons are similar when -
i) Their corresponding angles are equal
ii) The ratio of their corresponding sides are equal.
These two conditions are independent on each other, that is, both conditions are requieed for a polygon of more than three sides to be similar.
Similar triangles
For two triangles to be similar, either of the above two conditions are required, that is
i) Corresponding angles are equal
ii) The ratio of corresponding sides is proportional.
Criteria for similar triangles
★ Angle-Angle-Angle criterion of similar triangles (AAA) -
Two triangles are similar if all of their corresponding angles are equal.
★ Angle-Angle criterion of similar triangles (AA)
Two triangles are similar if either of the two corresponding angles are equal.
(Note that if two angles are equal, then the third angle would automatically be equal due to the angle sum property of triangle. Since, all angles sum up to 180°, then if two angles are equal, the third would also become equal)
★ Side-Angle-Side criterion of similar triangles (SAS)
Two triangles are similar if the ratio of two corresponding sides and the angle between those two sides are equal.
