the portrait of lady is written by Khushwant Singh in this story it talks about the author's childhood with his grandmother in the village his parents were settled in the city. They grandmother used to go to school with him and they came home together when Singh's parents decided to take him and the grandmother to the city and she did not like the city school coz there was no teaching of God and scriptures and Khushwant used to go to school by motor bus .After his school years he went aboard for further studies he will be gone for 5 years and he was given a room for himself . The grandmother did not show any emotions are lips moved to prayer and the grandmother used to recite prayer and when she takes a break she feeds the sparrows bread crumbs and after five years Khushwant returns home and the grandmother did not recite her prayers and she sang a homecoming warrior song and she got a mild fever the doctor said "she will be alright" but the grandmother had a feeling that her end is near they all started arguing and she did not bother hearing it and she recited her prayers and she had past away and when her body was brought home the sparrows had come near her coffin and author's mother fed them by giving bread crumbs they way grandmother used to do and they did not eat it and they next day the sweeper swept all the crumbs on the floor.
