- Organisms that are similar to fungi (FLOs)
Fungi and FLOs collectively cause more plant disease than any other category of plant diseases. These creatures are unable to manufacture their own sustenance, lack chlorophyll, grow in filaments, and may or may not reproduce by spores. Fungi and FLOs can survive in the soil or on plant waste for the winter. However, low winter temperatures prevent some fungi and FLOs from overwintering in northern regions. These infections spend the winter in southern regions before being transferred north by air currents.
- Bacteria
Bacteria are small single-celled organisms with cell walls that reproduce through binary fission (one cell splits into two). Natural apertures or wounds in the plant must be used to introduce the plant. Bacteria overwinter in soil and in or on non-decomposable plant material, but some survive inside insect vectors.
- Phytoplasmas
Phytoplasmas are small bacteria-like creatures that lack cell walls, giving them a filamentous appearance.
- Viruses
Viruses and viroids are intracellular (live inside the cell) nucleic acid particles with a protein covering that infect and proliferate in the living organisms they infect. Viroids resemble viruses but do not have a protein coat. Viruses and viroids are spread primarily by vectors such as insects, nematodes, and fungus, which introduce the virus while feeding.
- Nematodes
Microscopic worm-like organisms known as nematodes. The bulk of nematodes live in the soil and travel around with it. Some nematodes, on the other hand, are spread by insects and infect above-ground plant components.
