the following data may be a bit old... the data may be presented using histograms.
Sabarmati : 4 mg/L or BOD
BOD : biochemical oxygen demand.
In 2010 the statistics are:
Markanda: 590 mg Oxygen /liter BOD
Amlakhadi : 353
Kali: 364
Yamuna canal: 247 BOD
Yamuna near Delhi: 70
Betwa: 58
The above are the worst affected. Near cities and major towns the rivers are badly affected. In rural areas they are better.
BOD levels of 8 mg/L or less is acceptable... below 2 mg/L is good water.
Ganga : at Rishikesh 1.5 mg Oxygen/L. at kanpur : 5 mg/L
Brahmaputra: At gauhati - very high. at other locations : 2 mg /L or less
Tapi : 2 mg/L in some areas. in cities and towns, about 13 mg/L BOD
Narmada : less than 2.5 mg/L BOD
Mahanadi : less than 1 mg O / Litre to 4 in cities or chattisgarh
Krishna: 1 to 3 in many areas... 10 in many cities/towns.... Around Pune: 28 mg/L
Cauvery : generally from 1 mg/L to 3 mg/L
Ganga : 4 - 8 mg / liter BOD
Godavari : 5 BOD
Vitharini (Bitarni) : 2 mg/l
Narmada : 2 mg/l
Mahi : 2.5 mg//l
Sabarmati : 4 mg/L or BOD
