It might be a wonder but the scientific reason which bounds it is just simple. It starts when the water, from rain or any other source seeps into the cracks on the earth's crust. Upon reaching the rocks which are intensely heated from the magma, the water turns extremely hot. The pressure on this water can gradually push or force the hot water through the weak points on earth's surface. The biggest example of this phenomena is present in Yellowstone National Park, where around 470 natural geysers are present. They frequently erupt. But it's not able that like the volcanoes these geysers can turn to dormant or extinct with the influence of geological changes.
