Structure: Cardiac muscles are highly branched. They have cells that arer connected by overlapping projections called intercalated discs. They contain desmosomes and gap junctions.

Functions:

  • Pump blood all over the body
  • Carries the weight of the heart

Diseases:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Congenital heart disease

Preventive measures:

  • Keeping cholesterol and triglyceride under control
  • Involve in physical exercises
  • Healthy lifestyle
  • Quit smoking
  • Keep A1C in check.

There are two kinds of cells inside the heart:

1) the cardiomyocytes and

2) the cardiac pacemaker cells.

Cardiomyocytes manage the atria ie. the chambers in which blood enters the heart and the ventricles, means the chambers where blood is collected and discharged out.

These cells must be flexible enough of fibers to stretch.

These functions are highly essential to the proper form during the beating of the heart.

Cardiac pacemaker cells discharge the impulses that are accountable for the proper beating of the heart.

They are distributed all over  the heart and are responsible for a number of  functions like: spontaneously generate and send out electrical impulses.

Able to transfer intercellular electrical impulses All of these cells are connected by bridges made by cells.

Porous junctions form junctions between the cells.

They propagate sodium, potassium, and calcium to easily diffuse from cell to cell.

Some of the cardiovascular diseases that are :

1) Coronary heart disease – narrowing of blood vessels causing angina, heart attacks, and heart failures. Affects the arteries in the brain (cerebrum).

2) Cerebrovascular disease – includes stroke and transient ischaemic attack

3) Peripheral arterial disease – narrowing of arteries
