An aquifer is a natural underground stream that flows through layers of subsoil or bed rock and transmits water readily. An aquifer may come to the surface in the form of a natural spring. The water present in aquifers is generally recharged by rainfall and the undergroundwater table. It contains a variety of minerals and dissolved salts in it which enrich the water.

In the city where I live, Mumbai, aquifers are rarely found and if they are found they are mostly polluted due to some reason or the other. Aquifers in mumbai can be found in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park area. around the Tulsi and the Vihar lakes, they flourish mostly in the monsoon season and remain dry for most of the year. The watertable of mumbai is extremely polluted in some places and has been lowered as well, this also impacts the aquifers and natural aqueducts.
