Sundials and Obelisks

In 1500 B.C simple sundials were used to divide the time interval between sunrise and sunset in 12 different parts. The Ancient Egyptian Obelisks, constructed about 3500 B.C was the oldest shadow clock used to measure time.

An instrument used to measure time is called a clock. People used instruments such as sundials and hourglass to keep track of time. The movement of the shadow of a rod stuck upright in the ground, whose shadow changed direction with the movement of the sun across the sky, was used to make crude sundials.
