While handling a clinical thermometer one must take care about it so that is does not break.

It is brittle and prone to breakage.

At first the thermometer should be washed in antiseptic water for proper sanitation so that the patient does not catch germs and infections.

Then before measuring the temperature one should make sure that the mercury level is below 34 degree centigrade.

After the measurement is taken one should not hold the thermometer with its bulb and should read it along the mercury line.
