Chennai is located on the eastern coast of India. South India usually receives rainfall from south-west monsoons. But the south-west monsoon arising from Arabian Sea loses its moisture by the time it reaches eastern coast.

Hence, Chennai receives most of its rain from north-east and retreating monsoons which is low compared to other places.
