Answer: The distribution of electrons in different orbits of an atom was suggested by Bohr and Bury. The following rules are followed for writing the number of electrons in different energy levels or shells:

The maximum number of an electrons present in a shell is given by formula 2n2, where ‘n’ is the orbit number or energy level index 1,2,3…

Hence, the maximum number of electrons in different shells are as:

In first orbit or K-shell (n=1) = 2 * N2 = 2 * 12 = 2

In second orbit or L-shell (n=2) = 2 * N2 = 2 * 22 = 4

In third orbit or M-shell (n=3) = 2 * N2 = 2 * 32 = 8

and so on.

The maximum number of electrons that can be accommodated in the outermost orbit is 8.

Electrons are not accommodated in a given shell, unless the inner shell are filled. That is, the shells are filled in a step-wise manner.
