Indigenous people can help preserve natural resources by preventing damage to the environment and protecting traditional buildings , along with the creation of handicrafts to attract tourists and create economic conditions in their own environment.

The state is home to 16 major tribes — Angami, Ao, Chakhesang, Chang, Kachari, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Kuki, Lotha, Phom, Pochury, Rengma, Sangtam, Sumi, Yimchunger and Zeme-Liangmai (Zeliang).
