What is Alkaloids?

They are a group of natural chemical compounds that contain primarily and extensively basic nitrogen atoms.

Alkaloids are classified into the following groups:

1)True alkaloids---Which are nitrogenous in nature , the heterocycle type and originate from amino acids. Examples are atropine, nicotine, and morphine.

2) Protoalkaloids are the ones which contain nitrogen and also originate from amino acids.

Examples include mescaline, adrenaline and ephedrine.

3) Another alkaloid-like compounds is Pseudoalkaloids .

But of non-amino acids type.

This group includes, terpene-like and steroid-like alkaloids, as well as purine-like alkaloids.
