Alkaloids are chemical compounds and they contain basic Nitrogen atoms. The alkaloids are classified under two main groups and they are the true alkaloids, protoalkaloids. There is yet another alkaloid compound and that is pseudoalkaloid.

The truealkaloids are nitrogenous in nature. Examples include nicotine, atropine, morphine. Protoalkaloids contain nitrogen and they originate from amino acids. Examples are adrenaline, mescaline, ephedrine.Pseudoalkaloids are non-amino acid types and they include terpene-like alkaloids, steroid-like alkaloids.
