Manipur became part of Indian Union on 21st September, 1949.

Manipur was a landlocked princely state. During the world war 2, the INA allied with Japanese forces invaded Manipur and hosted the Indian flag. However, the Japanese were defeated and the INA was forced to retreat.

Meidingu Bodhchandra Singh the ruler of Manipur, seeing the changes in the world around him started to draft a constitution for his state, this task was completed on 1947 and in 1948 elections were held and  M.K. Priyobarta was elected the first chief minister of the state. Meanwhile the Maharaja negotiated with the representative of Indian Union in Shillong, and after few days Manipur was added in Indian Union.
