A collective noun is the name of a group of persons or things taken as one complete undivided whole. Army, Audience, Crew, Group, Herd, People, Police, Team... etc.

It is the kind of noun that stands for a group of or a set of things collectively. For example, the flight of stairs. This doesn't mean that the stairs have an aeroplane standing at the door. It means that many stairs or the group of stairs from 1st floor to the 2nd floor etc are togetherly called a flight of stairs. In the sentence, it is used as, he fell from the flight of stairs.

Material Nouns

It is the kind of nouns that stand for some kind of thing that is widely used. For example , wood. Wood is a material widely used for making rubber, pencil, paper , etc. In the sentence it can be used as, paper is made out of wood.
