When two or more political parties come together to form a government, it is known as a coalition government. The period after 1990, saw the emergence of many regional political parties in India. When no national party got adequate seats in the Lok Sabha elections to form the government at the Central level, they entered into an alliance with various small and regional parties in the states. This led to the new culture of power sharing as the national parties had to respect and accept the demands of the regional parties. Later the Supreme Court passed a law making it difficult for the Central government to dismiss State governments. This further led to the national parties accommodating the demands and priorities to the regional parties.
