Following are the reasons for colonial officials found vernacular novels as a relevant source of information on the life and customs of the native:

1. The vernacular novels contained information about the lives of people, about the household in India. British officials believed in the policy of knowing before ruling.  

2. These novels provided information about economic activities and trade etc. Therefore, vernacular novels proved to be a good source of information for the colonists.

3. These novels depicted the social lives of people including, clothing, religion, beliefs, and language etc. Hence, these novels gave the colonists a glimpse of the knowledge underlying the Indian community.
