Phulkari embroidery technique from the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, literally means flower work, which was at one time used as the word for embroidery, but in time the word “Phulkari” became restricted to embroidered shawls and head scarfs.

Phulkari and Bagh are both kinds of beaitiful and artististic embroidery designs. It was originated in Punjab.

Phulkari and Baghs are invariably embroidered on

home spun, locally woven and dyed coarse khadi because

it is strong, long lasting and easy to embroider on as it

involved counting of threads . In villages khadi

was woven in small width and later two pieces were joined

together to have the desired width.

Soft untwisted floss silk called ‘PAT’ was used for

embroidery work. These silk threads used to come from

Kashmir, Afghanistan and Bengal. However, the best quality silk came from China. It

was dyed at Deragazi Khan, Amritsar and Jammu and then distributed all over

Punjab by the nomadic tribes. These designs are now very popular and are exported to foreign countries too.
