Fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum, when combusted, leave behind a huge amount of Carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, therefore it traps heat from the sun, thus warming up the earth. This causes global warming. But nowadays coal and petroleum are being used very extensively so their emissions pollute the air on a large scale and cause global warming.
