Antonio’s assessment of the Jew, Shylock’s attitude seems fair on one level but is unfair at a deeper level.

In the courtroom scene, when everyone including the Duke and Bassanio is pleading for mercy, Shylock refuses to change his mind. He is intent on getting the pound of flesh from Antonio’s chest. Everyone calls him merciless and cruel, as does Antonio. At such a point, Antonio’s assessment of Shylock’s attitude seems correct, as Antonio calls him a wolf who has eaten up the lamb and made the ‘ewe bleat for the lamb’. Antonio feels that changing Shylock’s ‘Jewish heart’ is harder than asking the pines not to move in the wind, or expecting the ocean to control the height of the waves. In the courtroom, Antonio’s perspective seems justified. However, when we consider the background story, Antonio’s assessment seems unfair.

In the past, Antonio himself has discriminated against Jews, particularly Shylock, because Shylock lends money and charges interest on the principal. This, according to Christian principles, is a wrong thing to do. So, Antonio has, in his hatred towards Shylock, abused him in public, called him a ‘cur’, has even spat on him and caused a lot of mental agony. What Antonio does not realise is that he has played a role in making Shylock cruel, by continuously mistreating him over the years, and treating Shylock as a foreigner in Venice.

If Antonio, a good-natured man can hate Shylock, the same Shylock, with negative character traits will logically hate Antonio too. When we consider both perspectives, Antonio’s assessment of Shylock’s Jewish attitude is incorrect.
