After formation of planets, some of the leftover material consisting of dust, ice, carbon dioxide and some gases like methane, ammonia etc. formed Comets.

 

Stream of dust and gas form a thin field around the comet. The radiation from the sun and solar wind causes a tail to form, giving comets their peculiar and distinct appearance.
