Nelson Mandela was born as Rolihlahla Mandela. Mandela was an educated individual and attended the University of the Witwatersrand, University of London, and the University of South Africa. However, due to apartheid laws, he was greatly discriminated against. Mandela was devoted to joining racial groups in South Africa in order to end the apartheid laws.Nelson Mandela major accomplishment was the African National Congress(ACN). ACN was a group of black Africans who felt like they were being treated unfairly by the whites who were in control of South africa. He became president of ACN, through a lot of fighting and going to prison for several year, Nelson Mandela gave South Africa more equality with his leadership. In ANC, Mandela and other leadersprotested the unjust racial laws using both non-vilonet and violent tactics. The protests did not sit well with the government, so in 1962, Mandela and 165 other leaders were arrested and tried for conspiring to overthrow the government. He was put in prison in an attempt that he wouldn’t spread his leadership skills to others but instead he started write about what he thought since he couldn’t tell the others how he felt.About twenty-seven years later, Mandela spoke to the president F.W. de Klerk and was not only released from jail, but he had lifted a ban against the ANC. According to time.com, his imprisonment served as a symbol of defiance against the apartheid laws. Finally a year after his release, South Africa held its first ever open election and Nelson Mandela became the first black president.

Mandela became the President of South Africa after fighting the apartheid. After being imprisoned for an amount of long years and still fighting, Mandela was released and the African  were allowed to vote,therefore, with the power given to the people, Nelson Mandela became the new president. More than 100,00 South African men,women, and children of all races sang and danced with joy. Mandela talked about the “human disaster,” that apartheid created. "We saw our country tear itself apart in terrible conflict... The time for healing of wounds has come... Never, never again will this beautiful land experience the oppression of one by another." Mandela spoke to the South Africans that suffered for so many years. As Nelson Mandela as president he lead his people to a better era where there was less racial segregation and more equality among the races.

Nelson Mandela was one of greatest leader out there. His characteristics  that he possessed was vision, courage. These characteristics came from the article Great leaders grow deep roots. His first characteristic is vision, concern. His vision of the way he wanted to see his people was what gave him that extra push to keep going. Every leader has to have a great vision to be a good leader. Then,his courage the most important thing that he could have. Nobody at the time had the courage to stand up to the government and the whites. Once he took the courage he had inside him, he have everyone around him the courage to do the same. He stood up for the inequality and racism. His other characteristic was concern. Concern was not only worrying about himself but the better of his people. Most leaders just do what they do to better themselves. Some don't even care about their people or their issues. Nelson Mandela did and he would worry more about his people then himself. Most of the things he did was for his people. 

Nelson Mandela achieved many things in his lifetime. One if his major achievements was his win against the unjust government in South Africa. He was able to get his people to be able to vote and that was never allowed, they were given rights and the British never thought they deserved them. Another achievement was when he ran for president and won. He was the first black president in South Africa. He ended up winning the Noel peace prize which is one of the greatest award one can ever get.

Nelson Mandela was the leader South Africa needed because he accomplished what many could not. He ended apartheid laws, unified two racial groups and created justice for his people.Mandela’s actions also affected the rest of the world. Through his actions, he let the world see that equality is possible. In 1993, Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize for the impact he made on the world.
