He did not merely guide a political struggle; he imposed upon it a unique moral code and a new technique of action that of non-violence in the age of violence while every national movement for liberation involved violence, his struggle for freedom was purely non-violent. He brought idealism into the realm of practical politics and demonstrated its validity. In this approach he spanned East and West.
