Explanation:

Position of Hydrogen in Periodic Table -

Hydrogen is placed in Group 1 and Group 17 (Both).

Reason -

  • Hydrogen is placed in Group 1 because valence electrons of Hydrogen lies in s-subshell, and all Group 1 metals have valence electrons in s-subshell.

  • Hydrogen is placed in Group 17 because Hydrogen has 1 electron less than Helium (He), and All Halogens have 1 electron less than their nearest noble gas.

Since,

  • Hydrogen shows similarity with elements of Group 1 as well as Group 17, Hence it is kept outside the Periodic Table.

There are three isotopes of Hydrogen -

1) Protium

2) Deuterium

3) Tritium

NOTE -

  • Tritium is Radioactive.
