The poem is a scattered commentary on 'Man's cruelty on man'. War as seen in the poem represents the worst state of human behaviour.A man kills another man to achieve this great victory. On one hand is the Old Kaspar whose only concern is the great victory gained at the cost of death and devastation. On the other hand, there are innocent children who don't grasp the so called 'benefits' of a war.Old Kaspar unquestioningly accepts the loss of innocent lives in the battle. He is resigned to the fact that people die in wars.Throughout the poem,he is seen repeating that the victory was great and famous but hi is ignorant toward the cause of the war.
