Answer: Good-bye, Mr. Chips written by James Hilton is a heartwarming story of a man (who was the author’s father) who dedicated his life to teaching at an English boarding school (Brookfield School, a fictitious elementary school in south-east England) for boys between 1870 and World War I end. Mr. Chips had the desire and ambition to be a headmaster, however, he later realised that he would be better as a teacher.

Mr. Chips gets into depression; however remembering Katherine’s buoyant spirit, Mr. Chips managed to continue with his life. The love that he held for Katherine channelled him toward his students. Katherine had inspired him with her vibrant spirit, and Mr Chips began to become endeared to the boys who he had taught as he displayed a great sense of humour.
He temporarily became the acting head of the school and had many his students who had fought in the World War I. When Mr. Chips had retired, he shifted across the street from the school however came back to teach at the time of World War II. Nearing death, Mr. Chips overheard one of his former colleague state that it was a pity that Mr. Chips could never become a father. However, Mr. Chips corrects his former colleague saying that, he in fact, had many children over the years. He recalled many of his students as well as their names which had come to his mind as he was dying. When he shuts his eyes he gains consolation, thinking of his students after which he dies .
