Paraja as the name suggests documents the lives of a Paraja tribe, their customs, traditions and at large, their struggle. The Parajas are peasants but can they be classified as a conventional peasant? Another layer to this hypothesis is the tribal nature of the Paraja Society. Shahid Amin writing an essay in 1984 for Economic and political weekly magazine lamented at the over excessive usage of the term “peasant”.

Gopinath Mohanty's Paraja is written from his experience in the tribal areas of Odisha, where he served as a member of the Odisha Administrative Service. Here he narrates the life of the community and their attachment to the land, the soil of their ancestors. It is basically a "story of shattered dreams", as described by Sitakant Mahapatra, an eminent poet and literary critic in Odiya and English.
The author's tribal protagonists fall into the clutches of moneylenders, like insects, where for the victim the web is invisible until it is too late and they are thus engulfed.
