Comment on the following:
i) KO2 is paramagnetic.
ii) BeO is insoluble but BeSO4 is soluble in water.
iii) Lithium is the only alkali metal which forms nitride directly.

Answer:
i) KO2 is Permangnetic.
KO2 is permanganic in nature Becuase KO2 is Superoxide which contained odd number of electrons or we can say unpaired electrons.
ii) BeO is insoluble but BeSo4 is Soluble in water.
BeO is insoluble but BeSo4 is soluble in water Be2+ is small cation having with high polarizing power and O2- i small anion. When BeO is dissolved in water the hydration energy of its anions is not sufficient to overcome the high lattice energy.
iii) Litium is the only alkali metal which forms nitride directly.
Different from other elements of group Li is only alkali metal which forms Nitride directly because Li+ is very small in size so its size is most compatible with the N3- ion . Hence the lattice energy released is very high.
Thanks!
(1) KO2 is a superoxide which containd odd number of electrons (unpaired electron). Therefore KO2 is paramagnetic in nature.
(2) BeO is almost insoluble in water and BeSO4 is soluble in water because Be2+ is a small cation with a high polarising power and O2– is a small anion. ... When BeO is dissolved in water, the hydration energy of its ions is not sufficient to overcome the high lattice energy. Therefore, BeO is insoluble in water.
(3) Unlike the other elements of group 1, Li reacts directly with nitrogen to form lithium nitride. This is because Li+ is very small in size and so its size is the most compatible with the N3– ion. Hence, the lattice energy released is very high.
