If the net effect of the forces is not equal to zero then the body is not at equilibrium.

Explanation:

  • force is a vector quantity. As a result of this due to non equal forces that act on the body there is a change in the position of the body.
  • This is due to the effect of acceleration that takes place due to non equilibrium of the body.
  • This is in accordance to the first law of Newton which states every body remains in the state of rest on uniform acceleration until acted upon by some external force.
  • There is also a change in the velocity of the object. There is some work done by the force.
