Before the French Revolution, the way French society was ordered was according to the Ancien Régime meaning 'Old Order'. At the top was the King who claimed to have the right to rule by God.

Furthermore, the society was segregated into three estates; The first estate was the Catholic Clergy, the second estate were the nobles and aristocrats and the third estate were the middle class sometimes called bourgeoisie.

The middle class didn’t exist during most of the European history as kings and nobles ruled over farmers and peasants. But the bourgeoisie were more educated and wealthy, and they wanted more rights and freedom in the society.

The middle class played a significant in the French Revolution. They wanted equality for people and a better economic shape for France.

Therefore, they created the National Assembly and eventually succeeded in ending the Ancien Régime and the class system, distributing wealth equally among the population.
