As global climate change and greenhouse emissions are becoming more and more a concern, several businesses and organisations undertake "carbon footprint' programs to determine their contribution to global climatic change

Explanation:

  • While  greenhouse gases take place naturally, human activities have contributed greatly to the emissions of greenhouse gases. The carbon footprint or the impact on the environment measures the greenhouse gases, energy, & waste that is generated  which people are responsible for creating.
  • The Industrial Revolution now causes an overall global warming that affects the world. Decreasing greenhouse gas emissions can prevent premature deaths . Greenhouse gasses like heat traps of carbon dioxide and  leads to warming up the globe. Carbon footprint will enable to take sustainable measures to reduce such emissions and keep the environment healthy

Types of Carbon Footprint

  1. Primary and Secondary Footprint: Transportation sources like road transport,  railways, and aviation; electricity consumption for energy produced utilising sources like natural gas & coal (primary). Emissions which result for example, say, purchasing clothes that are shipped (emission from transportation) from distant location are secondary footprint
  2. Product & Corporate Footprint: The product carbon footprint includes  both primary & secondary carbon footprints, and corporate carbon footprint considers the whole business & calculates carbon emissions for the whole setup. Personal Carbon Footprint:  Includes travel, housing, products, food, and services. These categories capture all the ways wherein personal consumption leads to greenhouse gas emissions.

Assessment Methodology

The standard measurement unit for carbon footprints is "carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e)".  "CO2e" combines the measurement of 6 types of greenhouse gasses by "weighing" them "each" for their "global warming" "potential relative" to "carbon dioxide" over a period of time, usually 100 years.  The gasses comprise methane (CH4),  carbon dioxide (CO2),  perfluorocarbons (PFC), nitrous oxide (N2O), sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), & hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) The carbon footprints assessment includes many different techniques.  However, some of common methods are.

  1. Emissions factors: Representative values which attempt to relate the pollutant quantity discharged to the atmosphere with any activity associated with the discharge of that pollutant
  2. Life Cycle Assessment: Assessing environmental impacts which are related to all stages of the "life-cycle" of a "commercial product", "service, or process"
  3. Input-Output Life Cycle Assessment (IO-LCA): Evaluates the energy resources & the materials needed for, & the environmental emissions that results from, activities in the economy.

The carrying out of carbon footprint is essential to understand the mans requirements for a sustainable future.

Explanation:

  • The carbon footprint is a type of GHG created by man, event or an organisation and  is expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent. The GHG consists of carbon containing, gases like carbon and methane. It is emitted by burning of fossil fuels.
  • The carbon footprint is measured by undertaking the GHG emission assessments. The life cycle assessments and other individual assessments, Like the energy efficient requirements, better processing and product management.
