In the topic inheritance of genes, the term pleiotropy means the multiple phenotypic expression by a single gene.
Explanation:
- Pleiotropy is the result of mutations. Gene mutation is the alteration of DNA due to change in the nucleotide sequence. It is sudden, discontinuous variation in genotype and phenotype of an organism.
- Example of pleiotropy:- Phenylketonuria.
- Phenylketonuria:- This is an inborn error of metabolism is also inherited as the autosomal recessive trait. The affected individuals lack a liver enzyme called phenylalanine hydroxylase that converts the amino acid phenylalanine into tyrosine. Due to this phenylalanine is accumulated and converted into phenyl pyruvic acid and the other derivatives. It gets accumulated in brain results in mental retardation. These are also excreted through urine because of its poor absorption by the kidney.
