a rain shadow is a dry area on the leeward side mountainous area . the mountains block the passage of rain - producing weather systems and cast a "shadow" of dryness behind them . wind and moist air is drawn by the prevailing winds towards the top of the mountains where it condense and participate before it crosses the top

Hey there!
The rain shadow area is the area on the leeward slopes of a mountain range; in the shadow of the mountains where precipitation is greatly reduced as compared to windward slope.
For example: Central Maharashtra lies on the leeward side of Balaghat range. So, it gets little rainfall.
