A rain shadow is a dry area on the leeward side of a mountainous area. The mountains block the passage of rain-producing weather systems and cast a "shadow" of dryness behind them...The air, without much moisture left, advanced across the mountains creating a drier side called the "rain shadow."

Hey there!
The rain shadow area is the area on the leeward slopes of a mountain range; in the shadow of the mountains where precipitation is greatly reduced as compared to windward slope.
For example: Central Maharashtra lies on the leeward side of Balaghat range. So, it gets little rainfall.
